PROJECT
Design a book based on the PBS documentary Imagining America: Icons of Twentieth-Century American Art.
COMMENTS
I enjoyed this project immensely. The co-writer, John Carlin, is president of Funny Garbage and also worked on the documentary itself. I was able to gain valuable incite from him. The documentary had a pre-designed identity of it's own that had to be reflected in the book design. One of the ways I achieved this was to include angles from the closely cropped five-point star of the original documentary's opening title in the underlying grid.
Working with video stills helped convey the immediacy of the documentary video medium and sometimes created curious juxtapositions. Another interesting thing for me was to work closely with the rights and permissions department of the publisher and help in some cases, to secure publishing rights by furnishing preliminary layouts to reassure rights-holders.
