SPIN, a music magazine meant to be a more rebellious, counter culture Rolling Stone.
COMMENTS
Working at a music magazine was a dream come true. I started out as an intern at SPIN while in college. Shortly after graduation I was hired to work on promotional projects and ad production as well as helping out in the editorial design department. I helped them transition from the cut-and-paste mechanical method of editorial design to working in Quark and Illustrator on the Mac.
When Bruce Ramsay was hired as the art director, things finally swung into the modern age and I was in charge of the front and back of-the-book sections with new souped-up Macs.
Initially I was working with a design system created by the associate art director ("Flash"), then later with a system I designed under the art director's creative supervision ("Exposure") that included more charts and amorphic text arrangements. When time allowed I was able to design some features too.
